Shell: rain, wind, and hardshells

The shell is the layer between your other clothing and the weather. It splits into three categories that solve different problems and have very different weights and costs.

2.5-layer rain jacket (the standard)

Common mistakes

#1. Hiking in your puffy

The puffy is for camp and breaks, never for hiking. The moment you sweat into it, the down compresses, the insulation fails, and now you have a wet jacket and a wet base layer. Take the puffy off before you start moving uphill.

#2. Carrying both fleece and a puffy on warm trips
