Your shelter is the heaviest single item in your pack on most trips, and the single piece of gear that most directly determines how comfortable you sleep. Every backpacking shelter on the market is one of four types. The differences look like style preferences but they're actually engineering trade-offs that determine where the shelter performs and where it fails.
Tent
Enclosed shelter with a floor, walls, and a roof. Either freestanding (own poles) or non-freestanding (uses trekking poles). Either double-wall (separate inner + fly) or single-wall (one fabric layer).
Weight range: 17 oz (UL solo) → 5 lb (4-season 2P). Sweet spot is 28–42 oz for a 2-person 3-season tent.
Tarp
A piece of waterproof fabric with reinforced tie-out points. No floor, no walls, no bug protection unless you add a head net or bivvy. Pitched with trekking poles, paracord, and stakes.
Weight range: 6 oz (silnylon flat tarp) → 14 oz (DCF shaped tarp). Sweet spot is 8–10 oz for an 8x10 flat tarp.
Hammock
Suspended fabric bed using two trees as anchors. Requires a tarp (rain) and an underquilt (cold), turning a $30 hammock into a $300+ system. Excellent comfort in forested terrain.
Weight range: 40–60 oz for a complete 3-season system (hammock + tarp + underquilt + suspension). Heavier than UL tents.
Bivvy
Waterproof-breathable bag that wraps around your sleeping bag. Adds rain + bug protection without the weight of a tent. Most bivvies are paired with a small tarp for storm coverage — solo bivvies are alpinist-niche.

Every shelter discussion eventually reduces to a balance of these five attributes. No shelter type wins all five, the right choice is the one that wins the trade-offs you care about.
Trade-off 1. Weight
Tarp < Bivvy < UL tent < Hammock system < Traditional tent. A flat tarp + head net is 8 oz. A 2-person trekking-pole UL tent is 28 oz. A complete hammock system is often 50+ oz. Weight is the #1 reason most UL hikers switch from tent to tarp, but only after they've learned to pitch one well.
Trade-off 2. Weather capability
Traditional tent > UL tent > Tarp+bivvy > Bare tarp > Hammock+tarp. A well-pitched tarp handles surprising amounts of weather, but a sudden side-blown rain at 3 a.m. exposes the lack of walls. Trade-off 3. Site flexibility (where you can pitch)
Freestanding tent > Tarp > Non-freestanding tent > Bivvy > Hammock. A freestanding tent pitches on slab rock, established platforms, hard pack, anywhere. A hammock requires two trees of correct distance and diameter. In Sierra alpine or Northeast slab country, hammocks become non-starters.
Trade-off 4. Camp comfort & livability
Traditional tent > UL tent > Hammock (in forest) > Tarp > Bivvy. "Livability" means: can you sit up, change clothes, organize gear, weather a long rainy day? A bivvy is essentially a coffin you crawl into. A tent is a room with a roof. Hammocks are surprisingly comfortable in forest but require getting in/out into weather.
Trade-off 5. Setup time + skill
Freestanding tent > Hammock > Non-freestanding tent > Tarp > Bivvy (with tarp). A freestanding UL tent pitches in 3 minutes with no skill curve. A flat tarp takes 2 minutes once you've done it 20 times, and 15 frustrating minutes the first 3. Tarps reward skilled users disproportionately.

Mistake 1. Buying a tarp before you can pitch one
Tarps reward skill. Beginners read about the weight savings and buy a tarp as their first shelter, then suffer the first wet trip. Spend a season with a tent first, learn to read weather and pick sites, then move to a tarp if the weight still matters.
Mistake 2. Buying a 4-season tent for 3-season trips
