Backpacking Food Strategy: Calories, Weight, Cooking
Food is the second-heaviest category in your pack after water, and the one most hikers under-plan. The wrong food doesn't just feel bad, it adds dead weight, runs you into a calorie deficit by day three, and ends thru-hikes. This pillar breaks food planning into three pillars — calories, weight, and cooking, and shows the kcal-per-gram framework that experienced thru-hikers actually use.

The three pillars of food planning
Every food decision collapses into three questions: How much energy do I need?, How heavy will it be?, and Hot food or cold? Optimize each independently and your food bag stops being an afterthought and starts being a system.
Calories
Total energy you'll burn in a day. Driven by body weight, exertion, temperature, and altitude. Under-eat consistently and you bonk by day 3.
Lever: don't under-plan. Calorie deficit is the #1 reason thru-hikes fail.
Weight
kcal per gram (kcal/g) is the only metric that matters for food weight. Most hikers measure their food in days; smart hikers measure it in kcal/g.
Lever: target 4.0+ kcal/g average. Anything under 3 kcal/g is dead weight.
Cooking
Cook vs cold-soak vs ready-to-eat. Each adds or subtracts ~14 oz of system weight, plus fuel weight per day, plus meal prep time. Morale tradeoff matters here.
Lever: match the conditions. Cold rain → cook. Hot summer → cold-soak.

How many calories per day
Backpacking calorie burn is roughly 200–400 kcal per hour of moving time, plus 1,800–2,200 kcal of basal metabolic rate. Add it up: most days are 2,500–4,500 total kcal need.

Why under-eating is the #1 thru-hike killer
On long trips you can't store the deficit. A 500 kcal/day shortfall over 30 days = 15,000 kcal = 4.3 lb of body weight loss — most of it muscle. By day 14 your hiking pace drops 20% and you're carrying the same pack with weaker legs. By day 21 most hikers go off-trail.
The fix isn't carrying more food — it's carrying denser food. Which brings us to the kcal-per-gram framework.

The kcal-per-gram framework
Every backpacking food has a calorie density measured in kcal per gram. This single number determines how much weight you carry per calorie. Below 3 kcal/g, the food is essentially water in disguise. Above 5 kcal/g, you're carrying real energy efficiently.

The math example: 550 kcal of trail mix at 5.5 kcal/g weighs 100 g. The same 550 kcal from fresh fruit at 0.5 kcal/g weighs 1,100 g — eleven times more. Bring fresh fruit if you like it on the first day; never count it toward your trail-day food budget.
Target: 4.0+ kcal/g average across your whole food bag. The way to get there is stacking 3–4 kcal/g staples (instant rice, pasta, oats) with 5+ kcal/g calorie-dense additions (nuts, oil, nut butter, chocolate).

Cook vs no-cook
The cooking decision adds or removes ~14 oz of fixed system weight (stove + fuel canister + pot + lighter) plus daily fuel consumption. For a 7-day trip, that's about 22 oz total — meaningful when your base weight is 12 lb.

Common food-strategy mistakes
Mistake 1. Packing for taste at the trailhead
What looks great at home tastes wrong at mile 12. Hot dogs, fresh fruit, peanut M&Ms — all are 20% lighter as trail mix + jerky + bar. Pack the calorie-dense versions even if they're less appealing in your kitchen.
Mistake 2. Ignoring kcal/g entirely
Most beginner food bags average 3.0–3.5 kcal/g. The 4.5+ kcal/g target is achievable with the same food bag if you substitute oil for water-rich items and nut butters for jerky-heavy snacks.
Mistake 3. Under-snacking
Most calorie deficits come from eating 3 meals/day instead of 5 small ones. Backpacking burns continuously — fuel continuously. Aim for ~250 kcal every 90 min on the move.
Mistake 4. Carrying too much fuel
A 100g canister boils ~10 liters. A 4-day trip with one hot meal/day needs ~40g, not a full canister. Use our fuel calculator to size correctly.
Mistake 5. Forgetting electrolytes / salt

In bear-canister country (most California, all Colorado wilderness), volume matters as much as weight. Pre-pack food in flat ziploc bags rather than bulky retail packaging — gains 20% canister space.

When you should carry more food (or different food)
This guide leans toward calorie-dense optimization, but real situations call for breaking the rules:
- Cold weather below 25°F. Add 500–1,000 kcal/day. Cold burns calories you don't feel burning.
- High altitude (10,000 ft+). Appetite drops; total calorie need actually increases. Carry low-residue easy-to-eat options like soft tortillas and nut butters.
- Group with kids. Kids need sweeter, more familiar food to keep eating. Don't hand a 9-year-old olive oil and call it dinner.
- Resupply uncertainty. When the next town is 5 vs 7 days away, carry extra. Hunger is dangerous; 4 oz of extra food is not.
- Day 1 luxury. Pack one fresh, indulgent meal for night 1. The morale return on an apple + cheese sandwich on a multi-week trip is worth more than the weight.
- Special diets. Vegan, gluten-free, keto, allergies all change the optimum. The framework still works — just plug different foods into the kcal/g math.

No-cook saves 12–18 oz (stove + fuel + pot) and 15+ minutes per meal but limits your food variety and forces a higher base-calorie ratio (cold-soaked meals are usually less calorie-dense than hot meals). Most weekend hikers should cook. Most thru-hikers go no-cook in summer and cook in shoulder seasons. The deciding factor is usually morale: a hot dinner on a cold rainy night is worth a pound of stove weight.

Freeze-dried meals are convenient and reliably 4.5–5.5 kcal/g, but they cost $8–14 per meal.
